The 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco debuted a unique winner-takes-all knockout format, meaning every match counts as teams need to win every time they take the field to become world champions.

The 24 team men's event started on day one with a qualifying round for the 9-24 teams. The winners of the qualifiers will advance to the round of 16, where they will face the top eight seed, while the losers will advance to the bowl game, which will determine positions 17-24.

There will be some tough matches in the qualifiers as Ireland, who excelled in this year's World Series, will face Portugal, who beat mainstay Spain in the European qualifiers to claim the title in Cape Town.

The German team and the Chilean team, invited to the World Series, met in the qualifications and fireworks went off in a life-or-death situation.

Hosts South Africa are the top seed in the men's tournament after a run of 36 wins in six World Series rounds between 2021 and 2022. However, they will face stiff competition from second-seeded Australia and third-seeded two-time Olympic champion Fiji. New Zealand is the defending men's singles champion, ranked fifth.

The 16-team women's tournament also kicks off on Friday with a 16-round knockout round based on day one placement, meaning fans will be on the edge of their seats from the first ball to the last.

Women's Olympic champion and defending RWC Sevens champion New Zealand take on Colombia, top-seeded Australia take on newcomer Madagascar and hosts South Africa take on silver medalists France.

The women's team qualified by finishing in the top four at the 2018 RWC Rugby Sevens Final and through regional qualifiers. The boys team finished in the top eight at the RWC Sevens final in 2018 and qualified through the regional qualifiers. The women's teams of Madagascar and Poland make their debut in the Rugby Sevens World Cup.

Placement for the Men's and Women's competitions is based on points accumulated during the 2020 and 2022 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, while non-series teams are based on points earned during the World Rugby Sevens Series. July 2022 ranking.

Sarah Hirini, captain of the New Zealand women's team, said: "I'm really excited as it's my first time in Cape Town and also for the Rugby World Cup, it's a really nice venue...I know there are a lot of Kiwi Supporters in Cape Town so we expect the fans to come and cheer us on.

"It means a lot to play in the Rugby World Cup sevens. Watch it and you'll see how much rugby is at the top of so many players and you can see it in the way he plays over the weekend. I'm really looking forward to this weekend how special it's going to be
